Original Medicare

The starting point of your Medicare coverage

When Medicare first started in 1965, there were only two parts: Part A & Part B; and while there are more Parts and pieces to the Medicare puzzle today, this is why we still refer to Part A & Part B as "Original Medicare."

Original Medicare is run & administered by the Federal Government. And even today, it is the first thing you have to obtain when signing up for your Medicare coverage. Before you can get any additional coverage such as Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D (Prescription Drug Plans), you must first sign up for Part A and Part B and have your Medicare card issued to you.

A Brief Summary of Parts A & B

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is sometimes also known as your "Hospital Insurance." It covers benefits such as inpatient care in a hospital, skilled nursing facility care, nursing home care (inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility that's not custodial or long-term care), hospice care, and some home health care. For most people, Medicare Part A won't cost anything. If you have payed into the Medicare payroll tax for at least 10 working years, your Part A is paid for. There is a cost for those who have not accumulated enough working credits.

For more in depth information on Part A visit our Part A & B page.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is also known as your "Medical Insurance." Part B helps cover services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, and other equipment), and many preventative services (like screenings, shots or vaccines, and yearly "wellness" visits).

Part B does have a premium you must pay. That premium is based on income, but most people qualify for the lowest amount. The premium can change slightly from year to year, but currently most people pay $174.70 per month for Medicare Part B. It is generally deducted out of your Social Security check.

Part B can also have penalties and hefty coinsurance.
