Getting Started

Instructions for Setting Up Your Medicare

In most cases, you first become eligible for the Medicare program 3 months prior to the month that you turn 65. You have a 7 month window in total to sign up before you would start accruing penalties. This Initial Enrollment Period includes the 3 months prior to the month you turn 65, your full birthday month, and the 3 months after your turn 65. It is always better to start early to ensure you don't miss the deadline.

Getting complete coverage is a two-step process. Below are instructions on how to get started.

Starting Medicare Part A & B

Call Social Security

The first step in the process is to get enrolled in Medicare Part A & B. These parts are administered by the federal government and are a requirement in order to add on any sort of extra coverage. You will need to contact the Social Security Administration to get the process started. Once you are enrolled, you should receive a welcome packet in about 2 weeks that includes your red, white & blue Medicare card. Keep this card handy. You will need it over the years.

Here are 4 ways you can get started:

  • Online (at Social Security) - It's the easiest and fastest way to sign up and get any financial help you may need. (You'll need to create your secure my Social Security account to sign up for Medicare or apply for benefits)

  • Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.

  • If you or your spouse worked for a railroad, call the Railroad Retirement Board at 1-877-772-5772

Cover the Gaps

Once you have your Medicare card, you will need to get additional coverage to fill in the gaps that Part A & Part B don't cover. You can click here to read about your various coverage options.

For this additional coverage you will need to speak with a licensed health insurance agent who specializes in Medicare. If you don't have an agent, we would be happy to provide you with a free consultation.
