Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about Medicare.

Isn't Medicare supposed to be free?

Not entirely. It's sad that no one from the media ever mentions that Medicare cost money, but the truth is -- it does! The Medicare contributions you have been paying through your payroll tax all your life go towards paying for Medicare Part A only! Part B and other additional coverage comes with a cost.

Once you're on Medicare, does it cover everything?

Unfortunately not! Part A & Part B (together called "Original Medicare") do cover quite a bit, but there are some large gaps that they don't cover. One of the biggest gaps is that Part B has 20% coinsurance (meaning you will always pay 20% of the bill). This is why additional coverage such as Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement policies can help.

I take prescriptions. Do I need a Part D plan?

It depends on how your coverage is set up. If you have Medicare Advantage, many of those plans have prescription coverage already included in them (meaning you won't need a separate Part D plan). If you just have Part A & B, you will want to also get a Part D plan to cover your medication. Additionally, Medicare Supplement policies do not include prescription drugs, so it would be wise to get a Part D plan to cover your medications.

When can I first sign up?

Your first opportunity to get Medicare is during your Initial Enrollment Period. This period starts 3 months prior to the month you turn 65, it includes the month you turn 65, and the 3 months after your turn 65. In all, you have a seven-month window to get enrolled in Medicare.

Are there penalties if I miss the deadline?

Yes - There are two of them. If you miss the enrollment deadline, both Part B and Part D have penalties, and they both grow over time. The longer you go without this coverage, the higher the penalty will be when you eventually sign up.
